It’s no secret that you have to step outside if you want to build your own Lifestyle Business. While there are many platforms you could get started on, one of the best ways to establish yourself in the wild place called internet is to start a blog (yes, even in 2017). And it’s more easy then you might think if you are completely afraid of all kinds related to tech and coding.
Starting a blog nowadays can be done in a matter in of minutes, so here are the steps you need to take to have your own place ready without any coding skills!
Step 1: Create a Namecheap Account
This blog and most of my other projects use Namecheap, a hosting provider where you can buy a domain and the hosting for a WordPress blog. 28% of all websites are powered by WordPress, so it can’t be that hard if others did it as well!
Start by signing up for a new account on Namecheap (affiliate link) and enter your credentials. Yes, you need a credit card or Paypal account, but nothing is free today.
Once you are done, we you are ready to select a package.
Step 2: Pick a Hosting and Domain Name
The easiest (and cheapest) option to get started is a “shared hosting”. This means, other blogs might be on that server as well but you really don’t have to think about this technology stuff right now.
From your account dashboard, click on Hosting and select Shared Hosting. Add the cheapest package to your cart and continue.
Now you need to pick a domain. This should be something people can easily remember (perhaps this blog has not the best name..anyway) and it should be related to what you plan to write or create.
For your domain pick something that’s available as .com because honestly, that domain is still the one people take the most serious online. Add it to your cart as well and you got your order ready, so click continue at the bottom.
Step 3: Confirm your Order
Look through your order again, you should have the hosting package and your domain inside the cart.
You also get some free stuff but those 2 elements are what we need in the beginning.
If everything looks fine, proceed to checkout and pay for your package.
Step 4: Finding your actual Hosting Settings
Congratulations, you are now the proud owner of a little part of the internet!
Now we need to install the WordPress software on our server, and this is a bit tricky to find.
Inside your account, hover over the hosting icon next to your domain and click manage.
This will bring you to a screen with some information, most of which is not relevant for your right now.
Scroll down the page and look for a button that says Login to CPanel.
This will take you to an administration overview about your server with many items that will confuse you, so just ignore almost everything on that page.
Step 4: Setup WordPress on your Domain
You just need to scroll down to the bottom where you will find different scripts that will install something on your server.
From that list, pick WordPress and a ne page with some more information about WordPress appears.
Step 5: Follow the Wizard and Sit Back
Go ahead and install WordPress following the Wizard. You have to set a password for your admin user, so please make it safe!
Once this process is finished, you will get a link to your new WordPress blog or simply navigate to the domain you purchased before.
You can login to the backend of that blog using the dark topbbar (if you are already logged in) or by navigation to http://yourdomain.com/wp-login.php.
That’s all, it just works!
You now have the starting point for your Lifestyle Business and are one step further to quitting your day job, although it’s still a along journey ahead.
But I’ll be here if you have any questions or need help!
